Growing Public Health Leaders

Abstract

As our population ages and a large section of the workforce retires, we see the need for opportunities to grow potential leaders, particularly in the public health setting. In the South Central Health District, we will see a large percentage of our current workforce retire in the next 5-10 years. This necessitates the need for creating leadership opportunities for our current workforce in an effort to empower them to take on leadership roles in the future. The district has created multiple leadership opportunities for our staff in an effort to provide them with the skills they will need to be effective leaders and supervisors in the future. The South Central Health District has created leadership programs for nursing, individual programs, and, most recently, created a Leadership Academy for employees wanting to learn leadership skills. This presentation will allow us to share our leadership opportunities, the effectiveness of our leadership programs, and lessons learned as we created opportunities for growth in the public health setting.
