Finding Your Sweet Spot in Public Health Advocacy

Abstract

This workshop is designed to give public health professionals an overview into "advocacy vs lobbying", and (hopefully) give them the knowledge and confidence to apply their own professional skills toward a public health policy that they are interested in. Topics to cover include:

  1. Identify the differences between advocacy and lobbying.
  2. List and describe advocacy strategies and activities that are not lobbying.
  3. List and describe activities that are lobbying, and how we can intentionally avoid them.
  4. If we choose to lobby, outline what we can do to ensure we are lobbying as an individual, and not as a member of a federally-funded organization.
  5. Identify advocacy tools to help one grow as an advocate.
