This session will be interactive and feedback from session participants will be encouraged.

Abstract

ISSUE: As more and more people are graduating with degrees in public health, it becomes important for graduates to think about the future and what sets them apart from other new graduates. The purpose of this presentation is to answer the question: “What are the building blocks of a public health career?” For new graduates, it is easy to view the attainment of a job as the ultimate accomplishment after graduation.

DESCRIPTION: This presentation will take the approach that a job is only one step along the way to developing an enriching career. Seven basic building blocks necessary for every career will be discussed which include: professional boundaries, defined skills, role models, network of colleagues, feedback, continuing education and additional training, and future orientation.

LESSONS LEARNED AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Students and early career professionals (ECP) who think beyond a single job are able to craft a career that allows them to grow in their professional development. Public health students and ECPs are encouraged to think broadly about their public health futures. This session will be interactive and feedback from session participants on additional building blocks will be encouraged.
