Achieving a Healthier Georgia Together Through Policy and Systems Change
Abstract
Background: Georgia has been awarded a five-year cooperative agreement by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to collaborate on evidence-based policy, systems and environmental (PSE) change strategies. The Georgia State Physical Activity and Nutrition (G-SPAN) initiative is a collaborative of more than 100 partners working to achieve a healthier Georgia in the priority topics of nutrition, physical activity, breastfeeding, and obesity prevention in early care and education (ECE).
Methods: A landscape analysis identified of populations, geographic regions, partner activities, and PSE gaps in each priority topic area. Partners formed collaborative action teams (CATs), one for each priority topic, and prioritized PSE strategies to be implemented.
Anticipated results: Nutrition priorities include healthy eating research guidelines adoption in charitable food organizations and out of school time settings, and fruit and vegetable voucher and produce prescription initiatives for families experiencing nutrition insecurity. Community design for physical activity focuses on connectivity and infrastructure capacity building in urban and rural settings. Breastfeeding priority settings include worksites and healthcare systems with key audiences being women of color, healthcare professionals, and employees in hourly wage positions. ECE obesity prevention strategies will focus on enhancements in Quality Rated and Child and Adult Care Food Program systems as well as adoption of best practices in nutrition, farm to early care, physical activity, and breastfeeding. Equity, evaluation, communications and partnership engagement are overarching strategies that will ensure G-SPAN priorities achieve sustainable outcomes.
Conclusion: The G-SPAN CATs identified priorities and are designing action plans to achieve those priorities leading to sustainable outcomes and leveraged investment across Georgia by 2028. In this session, attendees will engage in systems thinking about how their work fits into the G-SPAN priority topics and will inform how partners can work together to achieve collective impact for a healthier Georgia.
