Stepping into Prevention: He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother Testing Initiative with the Divine-9
Abstract
BACKGROUND: In the era of Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE), we must strive to remove the stigma of HIV through collaborative efforts and innovative partnerships. Georgia has four metro Atlanta EHE jurisdictions: Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett Counties. Atlanta, considered by many as the Public Health Capital, is also home to four widely known and regarded Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs): Clark Atlanta University, Morris Brown College, Morehouse College, and Spelman College. Positive Impact Health Centers (PIHC) was one of the proud sponsors of the Atlanta Greek Picnic held at Morris Brown College. PIHC provided HIV Testing, PrEP Enrollment Information, Health Education, and Condoms.
METHODS: HIV testing was conducted via rapid tests, and all participants received gifts of apperception. Health Education was provided via interactive engagement, including an STD Roulette Wheel and question-and-answer scenarios. PIHC staff members of Divine 9 and HBCU Graduates wore T-shirts and swag to show unity, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
RESULTS: A total of 71 people were tested on-site, and 45 people were given HIV At Home Testing Kits. 600 Health Education\Health Promotion Encounters, with 90% of the participants identified as African Americans. Several recipients identified as heterosexual, same-gender loving, non-binary, and fluid.
CONCLUSION: These results indicate that additional exploration and resources should be allotted to innovative HIV testing venues in non-traditional partnerships. Multiple priority populations share spaces and commonalities and outreach efforts can be customized to show One Love.
