Role of Dairy Food Intake for Improving Health among Black Americans Across the Life Continuum
In this presentation we will discuss the nutritional deficiencies in the Black American population across five life stages and how to address it with dairy as an intervention. Nutrition intervention plays an important role in combatting health equity. This presentation provides practical strategies on how to make dietary improvements to improve health outcomes across the life continuum.
Abstract
The National Medical Association has examined and compiled briefs on the importance of the role of dairy among Black Americans. Over the course of several decades, the value of dairy in the diets of Black Americans has been noted as a solution in the fight for health equity. This presentation will focus on these findings, highlighting the role of dairy in addressing chronic disease and fulfilling nutrient gaps in Black Americans. This presentation will also include how to manage dairy-specific concerns such as lactose-intolerance. The nutrient concerns and solutions will be examined across the life continuum including pregnancy, fetal development/lactation, infants, toddlers, young children, older children/adolescents, and adults. The findings over the life continuum continue to show dairy as a viable intervention addressing deficiencies, diseases, and meeting national nutrient recommendations.
