Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: Evaluation, Diagnosis, and Management
Abstract
Approximately 1/3 of outpatient gynecologic visits are due to abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) and greater than 70 % of gynecologic consults in the peri- and post- menopausal are due to AUB. This discussion will provide a comprehensive overview on the current nomenclature to characterize bleeding patterns, as well as structural and non-structural causes of this commonly encountered clinical condition. A familiarity with the diagnostic tools to evaluate underlying causes, to include specific radiologic studies and targeted laboratory testing can be very helpful to the clinical work-up for these patients. Interpretation of these studies is pivotal in initiating acute and chronic management options for treatment. With expectant, medical and surgical management available for most causes, it necessary to understand the mechanisms and efficacy of each to choose and counsel patients appropriately.
