Using Data to Build and Direct School Culture
Presentation Abstract
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based framework to improve school climate by fostering a positive and supportive environment for students and staff. This presentation explores the effective implementation of PBIS as a framework to enhance our school climate through a data-driven approach. At Riverwatch Middle School, our intentional efforts with teachers and students have improved our school-wide and classroom management. By systematically collecting and analyzing data on student behavior, school culture, and intervention outcomes, schools can tailor PBIS strategies to meet the unique needs of their community.
We will discuss how data can guide the development and reinforcement of clear behavioral expectations, ensuring they are communicated effectively and applied consistently across all classroom settings. The session will also cover our use of data toward specific and differentiated classroom interventions, allowing educators to respond proactively to behavioral challenges and support student success.
In addition, the presentation will highlight the role of professional development in sustaining PBIS implementation. We will examine the use of data to inform targeted training for behavior and engagement strategies that support teachers, enabling them to effectively apply PBIS principles in their practice and contribute to a positive school climate.
Attendees will gain insight into practical methods for utilizing data to drive decision-making surrounding behavior expectations, share data with staff for buy-in and fidelity, learn about best practices for teaching expectations, and discover how to enhance professional development efforts. By adopting a data-driven approach, Riverwatch has created a more inclusive, responsive, and effective environment to support improved outcomes for student achievement.
