Success Does Not Come Without Failure
Presentation Abstract
Sometimes the rules change in the middle of the game, and you have to lose before you can win. Rutland High School became the first PBIS Distinguished high school in the State of Georgia in 2017 and maintained that status for 5 years yet, lost the distinction in 2023. Embedded in this session is a mind-shift experience that demonstrates how student voice and choice can be a life support system. Hear directly from students about how PBIS student leaders can change the culture of your school and improve behavior, attendance and academic achievement. School-wide PBIS is essential to changing the culture of your school. This interactive session will show you how to be able to adapt to unforeseen challenges using a PBIS lifestyle for students, teachers, and your community from the elementary to the high school level. Integrating academics and social and emotional education throughout the school makes for a solid Tier 1 learning environment. Participants will leave this session with tangible resources: sample community request templates, student choice boards, PBIS handbook, templates, and rewards for teachers and students that can be used immediately. More importantly, participants will understand how addressing trauma and inviting the community into the school can have a positive impact on the trajectory of your relationships with students and colleagues.
