Presentation Abstract

In Bibb County School District, our commitment to a multi-tiered system of support aims to address both behavioral and academic needs of students, ensuring safe and nurturing learning environments. At Northwoods Academy, we emphasize integrating various supports to build meaningful relationships with early learners and their families. Our approach includes the Pyramid Model (Bright from the Start) and Georgia’s Social Early Developmental Strategies (SEEDS) for Success, both of which foster young children’s social and emotional competence while addressing challenging behaviors.

Our educators are equipped with resources to teach and model positive social skills, using the Second Step curriculum. This program engages preschool and kindergarten students in learning critical skills such as friendship building, problem-solving, emotional management, and empathy. We actively involve parents by providing weekly updates on the social and emotional skills being taught which offer practical strategies for home reinforcement.

Additionally, we incorporate Dr. Becky Bailey’s Conscious Discipline® principles, particularly the “School Family” concept, to shift from traditional classroom management to a model based on intrinsic motivation, problem-solving, and connection. The “School Family” is created through consistent routines, rituals, and structure, promoting emotional regulation and strong relationships among children, educators, and families. Our goal is to build a cohesive community that supports optimal development and positive outcomes for all involved.
