Ignite: Elopement: Identify, Prepare, Plan (Group 1)
Presentation Abstract
Elopement is a common behavior among individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and can pose significant safety risks for these individuals, their families, and communities. Best practice recommends that assessments be conducted in order to determine the function of the behavior, followed by the implementation of interventions based on the results of the assessments. However, assessment and treatment for elopement may take several weeks or even months to complete. In the interim, caregivers and school staff should be aware of the risks of elopement and take steps to safeguard their surroundings in order to minimize the dangers for these individuals in both home and school settings. This presentation is intended to educate participants on the safety risks associated with individuals who exhibit elopement behavior, identify preventive measure for elopement, and develop an emergency response plan in the event that elopement should occur.
