Inviting Families and Community to the Table: Building Mentoring and Engagement Practices
Presentation Abstract
Often, economically disadvantaged students are met with additional barriers associated with social emotional learning and literacy. To address these barriers and build academic and social emotional competencies, Nickajack Elementary school partnered with families within the school, as well as a local martial arts nonprofit organization, to provide mentoring support. Fathers Being Involved was developed to encourage parent mentoring during the school day, while Kicking for Kids provided students with free martial arts instruction and mentoring. After this multi-faceted intervention was implemented, decreases in behavior referrals and increases in literacy scores were observed. This presentation will summarize the process for implementing this mentoring intervention, as well as best practices for community and family engagement per the current literature.
