Check In Check Out as Tier 2/Tier 3 PBIS Behavior Intervention

Presentation Abstract

In this session, we will discuss the essential components of Check in/Check out (CICO) and will outline steps schools can take to successfully implement this intervention within a PBIS framework. The counselors at Bryant Elementary School first started using Check in/Check out (CICO) as a Tier 3 counselor strategy. We piloted the program with students who exhibited disrespect and defiance towards staff and had multiple office referrals for behavior issues. Although the program was not successful with all students, we found that the students who did respond showed improvements in their attitudes, behavior, and grades. CICO was most useful for students with attention seeking behaviors. We subsequently utilized CICO as a Tier 2 intervention as well and created uniform goals related to our school-wide expectations. As our school moves into full PBIS implementation, RTI has come under the PBIS umbrella and we now have a more comprehensive process for CICO referrals, data collection and record keeping. Participants will leave this session knowing the benefits of CICO, how to tailor the program for their specific population, and what are some of the pitfalls along the way to establishing it at their school.
