Ignite: Spectrum Teens: Why social skills and belonging are crucial to mental health (Group 2)
Presentation Abstract
Maslow's hierarchy of needs illustrates the all persons need their needs met such as safety, love & belonging, and esteem to reach their maximum potential. All adolescence want to be included or feel part of a community; this is no differnt for students on the autism spectrum. Many times spectrum teens retreat or isolate because of failed attempts to be part of a group or exclusion from peers. Promoting an environment that is both academicallly and socially inclusive is not only mandated by IDEA laws, it is crucial for academic achievement and transition beyond high school.
