Lights, Camera, Action: A Mental Wellness Film Series

Presentation Abstract

The goal of this presentation is to share the work from vison to implementation of a Youth and Community Mental Wellness Film Series. Newton County Schools Project AWARE wanted to bring a fresh perspective to the conversation on the mental health and wellness of students and families, so we launched a six-movie Youth and Community Mental Wellness Film Series for the 2017-18 school year. These film screening events were designed to promote healthy discussion of social-emotional themes in films ranging in appropriateness from elementary through high school including opportunities to engage parents and community resource providers. The presenters will give an in-depth explanation of the development of the Mental Wellness and Film Series to include: 1. Discussing ways to engage parents and community members in conversations on K-12 student’s mental wellness through family friendly activities and giveaways. 2. Demonstrating how to connect schools and families to community behavioral health providers and resources beyond a direct referral from School Counselors. 3. Identifying effective ways to market district wide events to families.
