Presentation Abstract

This session is intended for participants supporting or implementing PBIS within schools tha want to gain more knowledge about developing stronger teams. Implementing and sustaining PBIS happens through the guidance and actions of a strong, effective leadership team. All members of the PBIS Leadership Team must clearly understand their roles and responsibilities so they can be active supporters, implementers, and leaders of the PBIS framework in their schools. Research discusses the importance of understanding team dynamics and the purpose of the team, which makes people mutually accountable about working toward a common goal. Team dynamics are created by the nature of the team’s work, the personalities within the team, their working relationship with their colleagues, and the environment in which the team works. Research also points out that there are essential components for effective teaming such as goal setting, developing norms, effective communication plans, etc. Highly effective teams practice distributed leadership, effectively communicate, and have a problem-solving mindset. Teams assists staff in the continual process of developing and maintaining positive school climates. The PBIS Leadership Team oversees the plan for shaping a positive school climate so staff, students, and families feel welcomed and important and inclusive in the development of the PBIS framework.
