Children’s Mental Health: Preschool to High School – Federal Grants Project LAUNCH and AWARE

Presentation Abstract

Project LAUNCH (Linking Actions for Unmet Needs in Children’s Health) is a grant funded by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) that was awarded to the Georgia Department of Public Heath in partnership with the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities in 2014. The Project LAUNCH implementation site is Muscogee County and focuses on improving the overall wellness for children ages birth to age eight with the goal of children entering school with the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical skills needed to be successful. Project AWARE is a grant funded by SAMHSA awarded to the Georgia Department of Education. Project AWARE’s focus is the coordination and integration of multiple services systems to address the mental health needs of children, youth, families/caregivers, and communities. Both projects use multiple strategies such as universal screening, mental health training, and mental health consultation services in schools to identify and address mental health issues in schools. This session will provide a look at the current activities of Project AWARE and LAUNCH and discuss the important partnerships created because of the grants.
