Brief Biography
Samantha Hebenstreit has worked in the field of autism and special education since 2000 as a self-contained special education teacher, program manager for adult services and now as an Autism Specialist for Dekalb County School District. She has a Master's degree in education from Georgia State University and has worked as an Autism Specialist since 2011. As an Autism Specialist, Samantha supports teachers to implement best practices in the classroom such as: visual supports, data collection, assistive technology, functional communication, and structured teaching segments.
Karen Hamilton Barineau is an Autism Specialist for DeKalb County Schools. She has 24 years of experience working with students with disabilities. Ms. Barineau believes that providing structure and organization on a child’s level of understanding can help to alleviate or moderate problems that arise. She has strong skills in developing visual supports, implementing augmentative communication, and solving behavior problems.
In her current job, she consults with teachers on behavior, curriculum, and instruction, and helps them implement the strategies in their classroom. Ms. Barineau also provides trainings on the Georgia Performance Standards for individuals with disabilities, Autism Understanding, and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention. She has presented training for parents and professionals on a local, state, and national level.

Presentation Abstract
Through the use of demonstration, visual aids, and audience
participation, the presenters will discuss instructional techniques
and visual strategies found to be successful in dealing with
children and young adults with problem behavior in the home, school, and community setting.
Session participants will be given practical ideas which will
assist in recognizing specific situations where communication
breakdowns can affect student understanding, behavior, and
participation.
Parents can utilize similar strategies by using pictures and language related to home and/or community events. Strategies are able to be customized to meet the needs of the student.
