Relevance

Teaching the monetary value of information, especially academic journal articles, can be difficult, especially because students often never see the price of an individual article or journal. Accordingly, this poster presentation is relevant because it teaches ACRL's "Information Has Value" frame through the Price is Right, ultimately inspiring information literacy professionals to use the game to teach the Value frame and others through gamification.

Proposal

When navigating library resources, students often remain unaware of the cost of information, particularly scholarly academic journal articles– and rightly so, given that the mission of the library is to provide patrons with free access to information. Part of the ACRL Framework, nevertheless, entails teaching students about issues with lack of information access, which can be difficult to teach in higher education, where students might have never lacked access to quality information sources. To teach students about the cost of information and the economic factors that prevent some from accessing information, two academic librarians integrated the Information Has Value Frame into the various Price is Right games. Using peer-reviewed, scholarly academic journals as objects in the game, the Price is Right: Open Access Edition teaches students the role libraries play in providing equitable access to information, as well as how academic information is commodified. Specific games detailed in the poster include Danger Price, Punch-a-Bunch, Dice Game, and Easy as 1-2-3.

Poster Outcomes: By engaging with the poster, participants will be able to:

  • Articulate how to integrate active learning practices into teaching the Information Has Value Frame.

  • Use the Price is Right to demonstrate the role librarians play in providing equitable access to information
