Abstract

As undergraduate students negotiate the line between research and writing, questions of proper documentation and plagiarism emerge. As key players in campus efforts to deter plagiarism, librarians are on the front line of citation style support (APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.). However, at the intersection of citation support and librarianship are varying professional philosophies about responsibility for citation support on a university campus, as well varying levels of individual involvement and proficiency with citation styles. While library literature addresses specific initiatives for how librarians support the citation needs of students, gaps exist regarding professional philosophies and practical concerns underpinning the provision of citation support. This poster will reveal the findings of a 2015 study that sought to examine the attitudes of academic librarians towards citation support for undergraduate students, their level of involvement, and librarian proficiency with citation styles. The poster will use a combination of visualization (tables and graphs) and exposition to communicate the study’s findings.
