Proposal
Eighty percent of people who use the Internet look for information about health online. Yet, many do not know how to find reliable websites. This presentation will demonstrate the importance of health and information literacy pertaining to teenagers and help teenagers and those who work with them build the skills necessary for finding quality health information online at the appropriate literacy level. This presentation will conclude with project and funding ideas. Since teenagers have unique informational needs, we will learn how to find quality health information on the Internet and will discuss several excellent websites to help teenagers find the answers to questions concerning their sexual, mental, emotional, or physical health. Such websites include www.medlineplus.gov, www.teenhealth.org, and www.teenwire.com. MedlinePlus is a website from the National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health and it provides information on general health topics and caters to adults and teenagers with different learning styles who speak English or Spanish. Teenhealth.org is specifically aimed at teenagers and discusses body changes and images, sexual health, emotional and family issues, and matters concerning school and jobs. Teenwire.com is an award winning website for sexual health information including birth control, sexual transmitted diseases, and teen pregnancy. Other topics will include drugs and alcohol, eating disorders, nutrition and obesity, and chronic conditions like diabetes. This presentation will also assist librarians and teachers to find lesson plans to help build a healthy and well-rounded teenager.
