Abstract
Innovative Strategies That Won’t Break Your Budget Information Competency at Georgia Highlands College (IC @ GHC) is a curriculum-wide plan implemented at a two-year college to increase student information competency levels. This presentation will discuss strategies which allowed the college to successfully meet the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) requirements of SACS through the use of innovative assessment and implementation measures which garnered enthusiastic faculty involvement and also managed to stay within a first year, $14,000 shoe-string budget. The plan was born out of a grassroots effort that involved students, faculty, and staff. The college community recognized the needs of a growing student body with a steep learning curve, and after a great deal of discussion, Information Competency was selected (an adaptation of the ACRL Information Literacy standards).
Presentation Description
The rationale and origination of the Georgia Highlands College Information Literacy plan will be discussed, highlighting the grassroots approach that was utilized in order to encourage faculty involvement and control costs. Program tactics will be addressed, including assessment tool creation, program promotion and faculty training. Flexible incorporation and assessment of information competency in one of the initial implementation areas, a basic Human Communications course, will be explored, and research findings from the first two years of plan implementation will be reported.
