Abstract

African American men encounter disproportionate health challenges in chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, asthma, and stroke. This study aims to explore how social determinants, perceptions of racism, and societal barriers impact health in African American men through a positive lens of resilience while navigating health maintenance in rural North Carolina. Data collection via qualitative inquiry included digitally recorded/transcribed, open-ended, semi-structured interviews. As a result of thematic analysis, eight emergent themes were derived from the documented experiences of research participants. This study illuminates the unique health challenges faced by African American men in rural North Carolina, highlighting the intersections between social determinants, systemic racism, and resilience. By centering the voices of African American men, this research contributes to a more nuanced understanding of their health experiences and lays the groundwork for transformative public health action.
