Abstract
In the current study, we further examined imagery and Protection Motivation Theory in the context of weather warnings. Weather warnings were manipulated in terms of severity and inclusion of imagery. Specifically, there were two categories of tornado warnings: F2 and F4; either warning contained imagery depicting threat related information, protective action information, both threat and protective action information, or no imagery. We found no effect of tornado category on protection motivation measures or comprehension, neither did we observe an effect of picture condition on protection motivation or comprehension measures. The study results are discussed with a focus on potential limitations and possible future directions.
