Description

Through the Spanish Department's service learning opportunity, The Community Apprenticeship Program, I have had the opportunity to pilot a partnership with Education of Migratory Children. Title I C, Education of Migratory Children fits into Georgia's Department of Education funds for migrant children. In doing so, it offers the Migrant Education Program, which serves to support comprehensive educational programs for migrant children to help reduce the educational disruption and other problems that result from repeated moves. During my apprenticeship, I was able to work with the program's coordinators to design a presentation that discusses my journey with Spanish and bilingualism in college. I presented in Spanish during a College Day event at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and at a Migrant Parental Council Advisory meeting. Beyond the presentations, I connected with migrant students and heard first-hand stories of the educational challenges faced by immigrants today. I also observed parental concerns for their children as they navigate school with English as a second language. This experience was both deeply educational and rewarding as I utilized my Spanish skills in a professional setting.
