Abstract
African American traditions and cultures have been taken and reinvented into other cultures for centuries. The present study investigates the traditions and cultures of African American cuisine that ultimately influenced the delicious southern cuisine that the American south is famous for. Studies focus on African enslavement and how African women played a major role in the cooking of the cuisine and keeping the African traditions going while transporting to America and while transitioning to enslavement and American culture. Women in generally have traditionally been known to be the chefs of the family and the keeper of traditions, this makes sense that the study highlights on the influence of African American women in cooking the cuisines. The study also focuses on specific food crops, the parts they plan in the making of the cuisines, and the background of the cuisines. It all comes together to help support the argument that American Southern cuisine in today’s society steamed from African culture and traditions.
