Description
" “It was a small step to Shirley Temple.”(23) Claudia, the first narrator met in the novel, discusses her hatred of pretty little white girls and the origin of her hatred. She cannot fully comprehend why it is those around her idolize these girls but understands that it is seen as the ideal. She comes to the conclusion that this is from the environment around her and their idealization of white beauty. Beauty is the most comprehensible way of understanding the ideal, “The American Dream”. In Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye, she shows the influence of society’s ideal standards by mirroring the story of the Breedloves against the imagery of the Dick and Jane books."
