The Global Critical Media Literacy Project: A network of activist-educators
Biographical Sketch
Veteran high school teacher and researcher Ben Boyington, M.Ed., founded his high-school media studies work on the idea that skepticism and activism are essential to citizenship. He believes that depth of understanding comes from integration, design, and teaching others, and that heutagogy is more important than pedagogy. His research into the 1:1 screen initiative is published in Media Education for a Digital Generation (Routledge, 2016). Boyington is also vice president of the Action Coalition for Media Education and coordinator of the Global Critical Media Literacy Project.

Brief Description of Presentation
GCMLP Coordinator Ben Boyington will present on the history and work of the Global Critical Media Literacy Project, collaboratively founded by Project Censored, ACME, and two professors from Sacred Heart University in 2015. He will share with participants the organization's current and future directions (publishing venue, resource center, digitally connected network of activist-educators) and will invite them to work with us in contributing to the creation of a critically media-literate society.
Abstract of Proposal
The Global Critical Media Literacy Project is a growing digitally connected network of activist-educators devoted to building a critically media-literate society through education and action. The organization, cofounded by Project Censored, the Action Coalition for Media Education, and two professors from Sacred Heart University's School of Communication and Media Arts, serves as a publishing venue for student work in journalism or critical media literacy, a resource center for curricular tools and educational activities, and a networking hub for teachers and place-based educators.
In this session, Project Coordinator Ben Boyington will explain the work of the current and proposed directions of the GCMLP, including history and rationale, and will engage with participants around strategies, goals, and impacts. He will also invite interested parties to join in the ongoing efforts to bring the Project's visions to fruition.
