Rhetorical Analysis: Teaching beyond the Appeal
Abstract
This panel advocates teaching rhetorical analysis as critical analysis in first-year college composition. Conceiving rhetorical analysis beyond engagement with “style,” we address low-stakes close-reading assignments; methods of alternating between “local” close reading and a long view of broader patterns; and constructing a course around the components of the “rhetorical triangle.”
