Abstract

This study extends stereotype threat research conducted by Joshua Aronson and Claude Steele (1995) to the writing classroom. Attempts to mitigate stereotype threat in First Year Composition classrooms yielded complicated results, suggesting that many competing factors activate or mitigate stereotype threat and its impacts on performance.
