Non-Research Proposal / About SoTL

Proposal Abstract

San Jacinto College implemented a SoTL Group on its South campus and by doing so, the college has been able to bring research into the college culture in a systematic way, encouraging faculty to make research-driven decisions with regard to the discipline-specific approaches they take in the classroom. Also, because research is not typically a requirement at the community college level, SoTL gives faculty an opportunity to hone their research skills and share scholarly inquiry with their colleagues on the campus, district, and national level. SoTL can positively affect the culture and can revive creativity in the classroom.

Proposal Description

This presentation will focus on the implementation of a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Program at the community college level, as well as focus on the benefits of such a program. By creating a SoTL faculty group, San Jacinto College has been able to bring classroom research into the college culture in a systematic way, thus encouraging faculty to make research-driven decisions with regard to the discipline-specific approaches they take in the classroom. Also, because research is not typically a requirement at the community college level, SoTL gives faculty an opportunity to hone their research skills and share scholarly inquiry with their colleagues on the campus, district, and national level.

San Jacinto College South Campus initiated a SoTL Group two years ago, with ten (and now thirteen) participating faculty from both the academic and technical sides of the college, and this presentation will discuss the process of launching this group. When surveyed at the end of the year, faculty stated that their SoTL experience had positively affected their teaching. Faculty indicated that SoTL revived creativity in the classroom and they were more able to incorporate scholarly activities into the decisions they made in the classroom. SoTL has many implications for community colleges, especially as colleges look at student success and graduation rates when it comes to state funding. The knowledge the audience will gain from this presentation can also be applied to other groups, including incorporating student SoTL groups or implementing a SoTL group at a university.

The audience will enjoy a round of a “Lightning Research” game as a way of visualizing how they might begin a SoTL group at a community college.
