Proposal Abstract

In recent years, the higher education has recognized the potential value of service learning and has seen an increasing adoption of service learning. We briefly introduce our incorporation of service learning projects in our classes. We review the project directions and assignments that require students to bring their project experience back to class, and tie with concepts and theories learned in course. Then we use feedbacks from students to assess whether and how the service learning project enhances student learning. Positive results are reported. The presentation concludes with lessons learned and suggestions for effective adoption of service learning projects.

Proposal Description

Service learning integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities (Learn and Serve America National Service Learning Clearinghouse). It is a student-centered and hands-on teaching and learning strategy. Recently the higher education has become more aware about the potential value of service learning and there is an increasing adoption of service learning practice.

In our presentation, we briefly introduce our incorporation of team based service learning projects in our Principles of Management classes. Initially we started adopting a service learning project in 2012 in an effort to encourage student participate in helping the Japan Tsunami. The project received lots of positive feedback from the students. Later on, we decided to continue using this new form of experiential education for the course and allow students to determine on which community they would like to contribute to. We review the project directions and assignments we used that require students to bring their project experience back to class. Students are required to do class presentations to report their achieved project results, and reflect on their project management tying their experience with the concepts and theories learned in course.

Then we use feedbacks from students to assess student learning to examine whether and how the service learning project enhances student learning. We found that students enjoy the learning experience and developed more profound understanding of the functions and concepts of management as covered in the course: planning, organizing and controlling, leading, teamwork, etc. In addition, they have also gained a variety of benefits including but not limited to improving their social skills and self-efficacy, and fostering their sense of social responsibility. We concludes with lessons learned and suggestions for effective adoption of service learning projects.
