If College Students Choose the Genre in Which They Complete Their Assignments, Will It More Accurately Represent Their True Knowledge?

Abstract

Author's abstract: Are we limiting college students' educational success when we require them to communicate course assignments in a professor's dictated genre? Students from elementary through high school are rarely given the choice of how they can express their knowledge of a subject. Teachers decide year after year how students will respond to what is taught… I wonder if they would even know what their strengths are if they had a choice? This research project will educate students about their learning preferences and allow them the freedom to express themselves in course assignments. First students will take the ‘BE Learning Styles Inventory' a solid research based internationally respected measurement. They will learn their strength and preferences using 28 eight different criteria from these areas: psychological, physiological, sociological, environmental, perception and emotional. Next students will be given the choice of genres to use when responding to course reading, articles, and experiences. Here are the suggested: video photography, computer graphics, improvisation, poetry, drama, music composition, photography, drawing, dance or movement, sculpture or another approved by professor medium
