Abstract

Encouraging students to utilize resources to seek further information and become self-directed learners is the goal of every nursing department. Access to resource materials in the classroom and clinical setting poses a challenge to students and faculty. The use of PDA's with preloaded resources in the classroom and clinical arena will be discussed. Evidence based practice has become the standard and students are held to this standard during their education and their eventual practice. A variety of prepackaged resource bundles are available. During this session the major ones will be discussed and evaluated. The results of a recent research study to examine the use of PDA's to increase self-directed learning in students will be discussed. Self-directed learning will be defined and implications for further study will be discussed. The use of PDA's outside of the discipline of nursing will also be discussed.
