Leveraging Institutional Professional Development Centers to Foster a Culture of Sotl

Proposal Abstract

Research has shown that there is a paucity of SoTL awareness and engagement at most colleges and universities. How can an institution foster a culture of SoTL and leverage existing professional development units? This presentation will provide direction regarding this question and will begin with a quick survey of the participants' perceptions of SoTL on their campuses. The facilitators will address the current and potential roles of four campus centers at Virginia Tech - Center for Instructional Development and Educational Research, Faculty Development Institute, Office of First Year Experiences, and Office of Academic Assessment - and explore how those centers can leverage their positions to foster a culture of SoTL. The results of the pre-session survey will be used to engage the participants in a brainstorming session related to their campuses. Participants will leave this session with a list of approaches and practices to foster SoTL at their home institutions. Professional development
