The Implementation of Lesson Study in Hong Kong: Meeting Curriculum Objectives While Training a Research Team

Proposal Abstract

This paper will present the research process and outcomes of a lesson study conducted in a Hong Kong secondary school in 2007-2008 as part of a teacher training program to improve sustained professional development. The objectives of the research were threefold: to promote research-based professional development by instituting a collegial department teacher research team; to mentor teachers in specific research skills necessary to conduct a focused lesson study; and to conduct a comprehensive lesson study on improving one of the language outcome targets of the Hong Kong secondary English curriculum, conversational fluency. The presentation will detail the institutional and pedagogical challenges in developing a cohesive research team among the department teachers. It will also provide detail of the teachers' lesson study research process and outcomes as evidence of practice of the research team in improving the English pair conversational fluency of high school students.
