Proposal Title

“Anyone in the Room?”: Virtual Classroom Experience for Higher Education Students

Proposal Abstract

Discussion will focus on instructional delivery through a Virtual Learning Environment System (VLES). VLES is an online virtual classroom that simulates the actual classroom situation. In the presentation, the findings and implications of the research study on the effectiveness of the implementation of VLES in teaching higher education students will be presented, as well as the difficulties encountered by the students during the implementation. Significant relationship between the difficulties encountered by the students and their level of computer literacy is also determined. By demonstrating the facilities inside the virtual classroom, the participants will experience being an online student. In doing this, the participants would be able to fully understand both the instructor’s role and the student’s role in online learning, and how to maximize potential benefits for both roles.

Full Proposal

Discussion will focus mainly on instructional delivery which is thru a Virtual Learning Environment System (VLES). VLES is an online virtual classroom that simulates the actual classroom situation. It can be accessed only by enrolled students with the aid of a User Name and a Password accepted by the system. Once inside the VLES, the student experiences the same physical classroom experience; the teacher providing them course-related lectures and assignments, announcements and deadlines of submission. The system is equipped with instantaneous networking of messages to the personal e-mail addresses of all entity involved in the virtual classroom once information is uploaded in the virtual classroom. Majority of the learning process takes place online. Its concept of 24/7 access to virtual classroom and lecture notes could help the students in learning.

In the presentation, the findings and implications of the research study on the effectiveness of the implementation of VLES in teaching higher education students will be presented, as well as the difficulties encountered by the students during the implementation. Significant relationship between the difficulties encountered by the students and their level of computer literacy is also determined.

Involvement in the Session:

By demonstrating the facilities inside the virtual classroom, the participants will experience being an online student. In doing this, the participants would be able to fully understand both the instructor role and the student role in online learning, and how to maximize its potential benefits in either role.

Goal of the Session:

To develop a deeper understanding on how online instruction works in an instructor’s point of view, and from the student’s point of view. Attendees would be able to operate more efficiently as an instructor upon understanding the dynamics of online education from both sides. This would be beneficial in improving aspects of the online learning environment that require extensive instructor-student interaction.

Is there anyone in the room? There will always be someone in the room. All a student has to do is access the virtual classroom, be in the room to experience online learning.
