Driven By Principle: Creating A Program From The Ground Up

Proposal Abstract

Over the past year, faculty at Georgia Gwinnett College have had the opportunity to build a unique psychology program based on informed theory, best practices research, and interdisciplinary modes of thinking. This poster outlines how the scholarship of teaching and learning was used to create such a program that encourages critical thinking, fosters life-long learning, and promotes continued growth and self-assessment. The goal of this poster is twofold: 1) to explain the process used at Georgia Gwinnett College to develop the program, and 2) to review the program's construction. As such, the reader will be focused on the fundamental aspects of developing and implementing a program that truly engages today's students.

Over the past year, faculty at Georgia Gwinnett College have had the opportunity to build a unique psychology program based on informed theory and best practice research. However, this program is localized in a school that calls for interdisciplinary modes of thinking. This presentation outlines how the scholarship of teaching and learning was used to create such a program that encourages critical thinking, fosters life-long learning, and promotes continued growth and self-assessment. The goal of this session is threefold: 1) to explain the process used at Georgia Gwinnett College to develop the program, 2) to review the program’s construction, and 3) to pull strategies from the expertise of the participants in the conference. As such, the audience will be engaged in a dialogue focusing on the fundamental aspects of developing and implementing the nation's newest program in Psychology. The session will also include small group discussion, brainstorming and concept mapping. Attendees should expect to share their program success stories, and they will walk away with the experience of collaboration in program development.
