Blended Animated Teaching Pedagogy

Proposal Abstract

In Blended Animated Teaching (BAT) pedagogy, technology enhanced teaching material is blended with classroom activities in order to optimize the teaching/learning process. At the City of Sunderland College, I have used BAT to improve students' learning experience of a traditionally difficult HND/C unit, Programming Concepts. For this, the course content was redesigned and broken down into a number of conceptual wholes from simple to complex to be delivered by BAT's teaching objects and used inside the classroom by the lecture and outside the classroom later by learners to revise and reconfirm their learning. Using BAT we aimed to enhance learner engagement and achievement in a higher education environment. The learners' feedbacks, regularity of use, success rate, achieved grades and follow up success reports are used as measures to demonstrate the effectiveness of BAT pedagogy.

Full Proposal

Blended Animated Teaching (BAT) is a blended teaching pedagogy where internet-based animated teaching objects act as the backbone for classroom teaching. At City of Sunderland College, I have used BAT to improve students’ learning experience of two traditionally difficult subjects; Mathematics and Programming Concepts.

In order to develop BAT’s web base material, the course contents for the above subjects were redesigned and were broken down into a number of conceptual wholes and arranged from simple to complex. These conceptual wholes are what make up BAT objects. Each object contains animations with tutor’s audio. A sequential collection of these objects make up the backbone.

In the classroom the educator would use BAT’s web based material to introduce and convey a new concept to the class, which are pre-rehearsed and optimized audio messages with objectively designed animations. Then from the same web based source a number of cleverly and incremental activities are provided for the students with different abilities.

Using this pedagogy we managed to address a number of factors contributing to learner diversity in a classroom, such as irregular attendance, different learning preferences and style, confidence in learning, language and basic skills deficiencies, etc. BAT acted as a fixed and accessible reference for students and lecturer alike. It was the true essence of what has been and will have been taught in the class.

In my presentation, I will demonstrate the backbone for Programming Concepts, some of Programming Concepts animated teaching objects, the way the backbone and teaching objects are used in the classroom (video) and explain how using BAT we had managed to deal with factors contributing to learner diversity and encourage greater learner engagement.

To measure BAT effectiveness in learner engagement, improvement in students learning experience and performance I used the following: Learners’ regularity of using BAT outside the classroom Learners’ feedback about their experience of lecturer using BAT in the classroom Learners’ feedback of quality and effectiveness of BAT’s teaching objects Learners’ achieved grades compared with those who had not used BAT Their lecturer’s feedback of their noticeably enhanced abilities and attitude towards programming in follow up programming units.
