The foundation OTTOnomy, created with a start-up grant from the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, is working in the Western Balkans to create a Regional Center for Cultural Heritage. With the help of many partners, we have saved a Category I Historical Monument, one of the last remaining historic structures in the city center of Albania’s capital, Tirana. We will restore this monument and bring it back to life as a Center for Art, Culture, and Education that will become self-supporting through income from a restaurant bar-kafe and rental of studio apartments, event, and exhibition space. As a cultural anchor in Tirana, the Center gathers and feeds the creative intellectual energy of the city, promotes cultural heritage tourism, and provides a model of sustainable economic development. As a cultural anchor in the Western Balkans, we provide a model of urban transformation that builds community leaders, in partnership with regional actors, in a holistic approach to community development and economic resiliency.
