Relevance

Strands I (Head) II (Heart) Instructional Games is a way to engage youth-at-risk in the classroom during everyday instruction and review.

Brief Program Description

Teachers will be given creative tips and tools to learn how to engage youth-at-risk through instructional games. Students will enjoy exploring hands-on activities that take from everyday games and lessons by fusing and transforming them into meaningful collaborative grouping exercises.

Summary

Middle school teachers will explore fun and creative instructional games designed to enhance student achievement and engagement. Interactive games allow teachers to motivate students to practice how to work with hands-on manipulatives which support collaborative learning. Teachers will take away innovative instructional gaming ideas to use in everyday instructional practices. Each game presented can be altered for cross curricular purposes.

Evidence

The continuous increase of student engagement and self-motivation are evident on teacher evaluations and observation. Teachers continue to explore and implement the usage of instructional games, particularly small group instruction. Teachers have seen an increase in the student interest with the development of enrichment classes based off some games presented.
