There are nearly 3000 Leader in Me schools throughout the world and the hallmark of this transformational leadership program is developing student leaders. This proposal aims to share the best practices implemented and experienced through this innovative process that has helped to increase gains in students, especially those deemed at-risk. The strands addressed in the proposal include:

  • “HEAD”: Academic Achievement & Leadership- We will share how this process has influenced teaching and learning practices along with leading/lagging indicators including attendance, suspensions and academic achievement
  • “HEART”: Social & Emotional Skills- We will share testimonials from teachers, principals and students as to ways that developing leaders within the schools helps to create a collaborative culture that celebrates diversity and the greater community.
  • “HOME”: Family & Community- We will share how we have have developed collaborative partnerships with Universities in a mentoring program developing college and career ready leaders

Brief Program Description

The Leader in Me is a whole school transformation process. It teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. The session will share best practices from the field and particpants will leave with proven strategies for increasing outcomes and creating college and career ready leaders.

Summary

There are nearly 3000 "Leader in Me" schools throughout the world and the hallmark of this transformational leadership program is developing student leaders. This proposal aims to share the best practices implemented and experienced through this innovative process that has helped to increase gains in students, especially those deemed at-risk. The session will NOT be promoting a particular product but rather facilitating the sharing of ideas and strategies for developing student leaders. Using engaging protocols and proven exemplars from schools throughout the country, this proposal will share the activities school leaders and teachers can infuse to encourage students to become leaders in the classroom and the community. School spotlights will include AB Combs magnet in Raleigh, NC based on their exemplary practices including:

  • Celebrate Success Assemblies: Celebrate Success Assemblies are special assemblies held at the end of every quarter after report cards go home and are designed to spotlight the achievements of our students
  • CHILDREN'S CHAT Children’s Chat is a time when student representatives from all grade levels can meet with school administration to discuss student issues and concerns.
  • LEADERSHIP DAY

    Twice a year (in the fall and spring) educators from all over the world come to learn about our school. Students greet our guests, present flags from countries that are represented at A.B. Combs, give speeches, showcase their talents, present data notebooks, and share their experiences. The visiting educators learn from our students and staff what makes our leadership model so special
  • Cultural Arts Assemblies: Each year, all students have the opportunity to experience 4-5 arts performances from a range of professional artists, including actors, musicians, dancers, and storytellers.

Evidence

Extensive research (qualitative and quantitative) has examined the teaching and learning outcomes associated with empowering educators to infuse leadership development within a school culture. Beyond the leading and lagging indicators, schools focusing on developing students as leaders have received the National Magnet School of the Year and accolades from the Florida Department of Education.

Biographical Sketch

Joshua Covey brings a combination of energy, creativity, and insight to his professional work and client engagements. With a background in strategy consulting, Joshua has advised executives across multiple industries including healthcare, technology, consumer products, and education. He draws on a wealth of experience in helping organizations to more effectively achieve their objectives. Currently, Joshua is leading the marketing and partnership teams for FranklinCovey’s Education Practice, focusing on The Leader in Me process. He also facilitates training sessions with schools across the United States in the areas of leadership development, achieving school-wide goals, and student empowerment. In addition, Joshua delivers keynote speeches to education audiences at various conferences. Joshua studied Political Science as an undergraduate student at Brigham Young University and completed a MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management, with an emphasis in entrepreneurship.

Dr. Amanda Pascale came to UNF in August of 2011. Prior to joining the Graduate School in 2014, she served as Associate Director in the Office of Admissions. She also currently adjunct teaches Master's level students in the Higher Education program for the College of Education and Human Services. Dr. Pascale earned a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration as well as a Master's of Science in College Student Personnel and Student Affairs from the University of Tennessee. Additionally, she holds a Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology from the University of Central Florida. She is a member of multiple national organizations and has authored several published research articles and book chapters relating to student success, recruitment, and retention in higher education.

Eve Miller is the director of research for FranklinCovey Education and an instructor at the University of Utah. Eve has a PhD. in cognitive neuroscience and did most of her academic research on the environmental factors that play a role in cognitive performance. In her decade of research experience, Eve has worked with many diverse populations from Alzheimer’s disease patients, homeless families, fighter pilots, and educators. She is trained in a variety of research methods from brain imaging to behavioral assessment. Eve’s real research passion is in education as she is humbled and inspired by the daily work of teachers and wants to provide them with the best tools and knowledge. She believes that when a teacher is empowered with effective paradigms and practices she/he will be a force for good in the lives of her/his students.

Matthew Ohlson has a Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Policy with a specialization in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Florida. He also received comprehensive leadership training from the New York City Leadership Academy and the The Schlechty/Hohmann Principals Academy. His K-12 experience includes roles as a 15-year teacher and school leader in the Boston Public Schools and the Florida Global School. In higher education, Dr. Ohlson served as a clinical instructor at the University of Florida, Director of the nationally recognized C.A.M.P. mentoring program and leadership facilitator at the Lastinger Center for Learning. Matthew has also conducted comprehensive program evaluation for state agencies and helped to develop the new Florida Education Leadership Exam (FELE). Most recently, he served as an educational consultant with the Florida Department of Education, training educators and leaders throughout the state as they transition to the new curriculum standards.
