Brief Program Description

This session, geared towards administrators and school leaders, will highlight the power of utilizing parent voice in school leadership. Participants will be given twelve actionable steps and a framework to use to effectively utilize the power of parents in creating success at school.

Summary

Through this engaging and motivating session, participants will learn actionable steps in forging effective partnerships with parents in their school community to promote success, enhance awareness, and create a shared vision. The presentation will discuss specific programs implemented through parent collaboration and will share school survey data showing school satisfaction data. The session is led by a principal and parent who have successfully partnered to implement unique programs resulting in incredible achievements.

Evidence

Meta-analysis conducted by William J Jeynes at California State University at Long Beach and published in December 2005 by Harvard Family Research Project found the following: •*Parental involvement is associated with higher student achievement outcomes(grades, standardized test scores, teacher ratings). •*This phenomenon was observed for all student populations. •The advantage was measured at .5 to .6 of a standard deviation for educational outcomes, grades, and achievement. A 1994 study conducted by Henderson and Berla found that one of the best predictors of student achievement was for a student’s family to “become involved in their children’s education at school and in the community.” •The study also found that parent involvement activities that are “effectively planned and well implemented result in substantial benefits to children, parents, educators, and the school” •More information can be found in The Benefits of Parent Involvement: What Research Has to Say

Additionally, our school survey data indicates high levels of school satisfaction from parents, students, and staff. Our school has consistently performed well on our state tests and one of our parent collaboration projects was recognized by the Virginia State School Board for innovative practices.
