HONEST Teaching is a methodology that looks at each child, not only as a student, but as a complete person, to meet their individual needs.
Brief Program Description
It’s time to get real with HONEST Teaching.
This frank approach takes the excuses out of the classroom and places the focus back on learning. Teachers, counselors, or support staff that work with children of any socio-economics or learning abilities can benefit from HONEST Teaching.
Summary
HONEST Teaching H- Have a conversation. Meet with each student at the beginning of the year to learn about them and let them know that you care about them as an individual. O- Offer support. Each student knows that you are available and willing to provide them with the support that they need; from a clean shirt, pair of socks, or help with an assignment, all they need to do is ask. N- Never falter. Consistency is key. The students need to know that you will hold them to the same standards every day, no matter what. Their lives may be hectic and unstable, but with you they can feel secure with knowing what to expect. E- Everybody together. You cannot do it alone. Working as a team with other grade level teachers will increase your abilities and success by drawing on the strengths of others. S- Set high standards. Students know what is expected of them academically and behaviorally, and that you hold them to those high expectations that they are capable of accomplishing. T- Teach to their needs. Know and understand the learning style and/or learning needs of each student, and ensure that the instructional approaches and styles meet their needs.
Evidence
After utilizing this approach last year, our classroom of 30 students made significant gains in their academics while increasing their self-confidence and self-worth. The specific breakdown of our class of 30 was: 73%- Title 1 50 %- ESE 20 %- ESOL Results: 96% of our class made learning gains as measured by the 2014 FCAT.
