Abstract
The photodimerization of trans-cinnamic acid creates truxillic acid. This is a [2+2] solid state photocycloaddition reaction. Some have worked with different cinnamic acid polymers to create light induced shape memory polymers. Others have worked with the truxillic acid to create a derivative can successfully inhibit fatty acid binding proteins (FABPs). This is very important for anti-inflammatory drugs.
We started with 4-cyanobenzaldehyde and synthesized 4-cyano trans-cinnamic acid using a green method. The yield with a small sample was 81%. Upon scale up, the product had a 74% yield. The photo-product had an 87% conversion based on 1H-NMR studies.
