Program Abstract

This presentation will focus on how civic and community engagement practitioners can design and create powerful programming though incorporating high-impact educational practices and a developmental framework. Being intentional with design can refresh programming, grow and enhance student learning and create program buy-in and sustainability. We will use both literature and practical examples to explore what this looks like in specific programs such as alternative breaks, campus wide days of service, service fellowship or scholar programs, and across co-curricular offerings from your department or institution.

Presentation Description

At my last conference experience I ran into several new professionals who were more on the civic/community engagement side of things than pure academic service-learning and I think an offering like this one could be valuable to that group. My experience working with and developing "typical" programming like alternative breaks, campus-wide days of service, on-going local service programs, etc at a variety of institutions provide the groundwork for helping others think about ways to make them more meaningful. Two of my previous institutions have won Break Away alternative break program of the year and I was part of the High Impact Initiative with the Bonner Foundation during my time at Guilford College. For this presentation I am drawing on my learning through these experiences, my background in student development theory, and the success I have had at UNCG redesigning many elements of our community engagement programming.

The goals for this presentation are to present civic/community engagement programming as connected to important learning outcomes similar to service-learning, provide participants with developmental frameworks, along with resources and examples for incorporating high impact educational practices into programming.

Participants will be engaged through the use of a facilitated and conversational style of presentation in which they have the chance to bring questions to the group.
