We've got the P. O. W. E. R.!

Brief Biography

With more than 19 years of experience as an educator and administrator, I am a change agent that drives results through program assessment, development and monitoring while ensuring appropriate levels of support and engagement of faculty and students. Leveraging my experience with data analysis, I have developed actionable plans to improve performance while building consensus for support and implementation.

Currently, I am principal at Social Circle Middle School. I previously served as Principal at Booker T. Washington High School’s Banking, Finance and Investment Small School, where I led faculty in implementing a specialty curriculum with 14 months of instruction provided in the 9-month school year. Under my direction, we achieved notable improvements in student achievement and growth, often outperforming the district and the state in core measures.

In other leadership roles, I have led teams through major improvement processes such as evaluation and peer observation and have managed highly complex transition planning and execution for a significant school model change. Throughout my career, I’ve been recognized as a team builder who promotes multicultural awareness and a positive learning environment.

Presentation Abstract

Social Circle Middle School serves 401 students in this rural community of about 3,000 people. Over one year ago, there were over 40 Discipline Referrals, 1,200 Unexcused Tardies to school and 900 checkouts. However, with the implementation of PBIS, the data has improved significantly based on the PBIS and parent buy-in and participation. Discipline referrals went down by 16%, Unexcused Tardies decreased by 25% and checkouts decreased by 21% in one year. This presentation will discuss the use of P.O.W.E.R. (Present & Prepared, On-Task, Winning Attitude, Enthusiastic and Responsible) in school and at home. We will show how we gave parents the P.O.W.E.R. and built P.O.W.E.R. in our students with just a few expectations, a consistent rewards system and a community of supporters!
