Creative Framing for Critical Methodolg(ies): Inquiry Processes

Abstract

Creative Framing for Critical Methodologies provides students of qualitative research creative possibilities for framing research. Using metaphors, analogies, and images for associative thinking, research/inquiry is situated through new lenses facilitating deeper inquiry and critical analysis. Whether new analytics are related disciplines or tools within disciplines, these elements push for novel connections, insights, and practices. In the tradition of bricolage, Creative Framing for Critical Methodologies allows the researcher to reach innovatively for a compass to guide questions asked, explored, and insights produced. Creative framing allows for the emergent, contingent and unpredictable to matter and for the researcher to attend to nuances between methodology, researcher/researched, and method. It gives credence to researcher as social agent and carefully invites him/her to interrogate the effects of positionality, wrestle with the material conditions of one’s subjectivity and harness the uncertainty in inquiry to guide action. Not exactly a methods, practices or arts integration text, yet it brings all of these to bear on critically imaginative inquiry. It sees (produces knowledge) through the visual and associative, bends through the intellect, and links the indeterminate to the clarifying. This work utilizes conceptual/pragmatic framing for seeing/being pedagogically through research. This text invites the researcher to delve into inquiry questions, study metaphors and tools that can facilitate experiencing various modes of inquiry, discovering new intellectual borders, and connecting to a hopeful futurity, not one that ignores/obscures the actual, but works with because it gives credence to the layers in the process and complexity of the human condition.
