Jamming with the Rhythms of Completing a Dissertation: Presenting the Isness.

Abstract

The goal of my presentation is to present and discuss the completion of my dissertation, Jamming as a Curriculum of Resistance: Popular Music, Shared Intuitive Headspaces, and Rocking in the Free World. Since my dissertation is in the form of a record album, I would like to discuss how each chapter is a song that comes together in a more holistic sense that makes the dissertation flow from one song to the next like listening to an album. I want to play the songs and explain how they were created and what they meant in my understanding of curriculum in a musical way. I want to discuss the process of writing a dissertation that opened many doors in my understanding of different ways of seeing the world to help me make sense of multiple realities. I would hope that graduate students who were about to embark on writing a dissertation or are in the process of writing one attend this session so I can interact with them to explain that finishing a dissertation in a non-standard form can be accomplished. Overall, this presentation is a celebration of completing a dissertation while being able to present it to those interested in understanding how my journey as a musician, a teacher, a graduate student, and citizen in this world made me a better person for being able to have the privilege of going through the process of living, creating, and writing it.
